Special Movements

Children with developmental disabilities typically require some additional help learning to control their own body parts. Your child may appear clumsy and uncoordinated. He may shy away from sports or other activities where the children are expected to run, jump, dance, kick, climb, catch... basically anything that involves movement, coordination, balance and agility.

You may feel upset that your child is sometimes singled out or left out. Maybe he is performing poorly in gym class or after-school sports, and his confidence is waning as a result. Naturally, this contributes to more nervous feelings and awkwardness. Scrapes, stumbles, skinned knees and wounded pride may all be a part of the regular routine. You long for a way to help him overcome his challenges, so that one day he might be able to run and play in a graceful and uninhibited way.

The Growing Together Therapeutic Center has put together a Special Movements program designed to help your child gain better control over his own body. The program draws upon fundamental concepts that will guide your child through basic movements across the floor incorporating space, time and rhythm.

Special Movements provides the students with opportunities to develop:

Improved sensory processing Increased flexibility
Muscle strength
Improved spatial relations

Interpersonal skills

Refined motor skills

Increased coordination

Improved endurance

Sense of rhythm
Greater confidence
Higher self-esteem

Our goal is to assist in developing all of these skills in a fun-filled learning environment and to explore the art of movement through creative dance, music and basic tumbling.
